Transmitter :
Attaches to the bird, transmits a pulsed radio signal on a specific frequency.
Receiver :
Collects the transmitted radio signal and converts it to an audible tone.
Yagi Antenna :
So called after Mr Hidetsugu Yagi & Mr Shintaro Uda the Japanese inventors. This is an extremely important link in the telemetry chain because this antenna gives the whole system its directionality. This is because, when the Yagi antenna is pointing towards the transmitted signal, it will collect and channel it into the receiver through the link cable. Whilst pointing away from the same signal very little (if any) of the radio waves are collected, resulting in very little or no audio tone coming from the receiver.
What transmitter do I need ?:
This choice depends on what bird you fly, or intend to start with. If you fly a broad wing such as a Harris hawk, that in theory will not range very far, then you do not need a particularly high powered transmitter. However if you intend to progress onto a Falcon then a more powerful unit would be advisable. Obviously a high powered transmitter is acceptable on a bird that should not range more than a mile or two but a low powered unit is not suitable for a far ranging falcon.
